Dear Yuletide Writer letter (2011)

Dear Yuletide Writer,

First, thank you so much for this! Here are my preferences for each fandom, and in general. Having read all the posts on the yuletide lj about making a good letter(and panicked! :P), I am about to get very wordy! Bear with me, please :) I adore each and every one of this fandoms, so getting fic for any of them will make me a very, very happy person!

General:
Ratings-wise, I’m fine with anything. I don’t mind sex scenes if that’s where the story’s going (though gen fic is also awesome), but would prefer them not too explicit – fade to black is also totally cool. I’m not too fond of highly detailed graphic violence, either, but if it’s absolutely necessary to your fic, go ahead ( this depends on the fandom, too – generally, I’d say stick with the source’s level – I can take sea battles in Sandokán, and crazy explosions in Girl Genius, of course.)

Story-wise: A good plot, a character piece, an exploration of friendship or romance, an adventure, a quiet moment, a missing scene, a different POV to the canon... Any and all of these are great! Gen, het, slash, femmeslash, threesomes are all ok.
Thing I like: friendship, friends helping each other out, humour, banter, nerdiness, science, happy (or happy-ish at least, not overwhelming despair) endings. (and a great many other things! These were just the first that came to mind).
Things I dislike: noncon/dubcon, incest, gratuitous violence, underage sex.

Fandom specific: (obviously, all optional details are optional! I'm just giving them in case you're interested :) )

Girl Genius – Gilgamesh Wulfenbach, Agatha Heterodyne, Tarvek Sturmvoraus

Prompt I gave: There probably were solutions to this problem that didn’t involve breaking all the laws of human morality...and those of most legal codes in existence... and of physics. But those solutions were always so boring.

Prompt continuation: What they’re solving I’ll leave up to you. Here’s a few ideas if you’re interested, but feel free to ignore them – all I want is these three solving a problem in their delightfully sparky way (Or just these three being their delightfully sparky selves – I love these characters!).
• Some part of Castle Heterodyne (doubtless with the Castle making ‘helpful’ comments!).
• Removing Lucrezia from Agatha’s head.
• The romantic triangle (if you go for this one, I don’t much mind how it works out – I can see Agatha with both or either of them – but if she picks one, please be nice to the other, because I love them both).
• The political situation – the Baron possibly dead, Tarvek’s connection to the fifty families, Agatha’s claiming of Castle Heterodyne...

What I love about this fandom: Like the tagline says, “Adventure! Romance! Mad Science!” Plus devious politics, jägermonsters, a murderous talking castle, a talking cat, a travelling circus of sparks ...

Why I love these characters: I love the way they interact, and how they evolve as a result of everything that happens to them. I like how Agatha’s grown from scared student to the Heterodyne. I like how Gil and Tarvek both try to scheme behind Agatha’s back for her protection. I love when they all go into the “madness place” and science results!

Swallows and Amazons – Titty Walker, Dick Callum, Dorothea Callum

Prompt I gave: I love the friendship dynamic between these three, so I’d be delighted with a friendship fic. Some childhood adventure on the lakes would be lovely, or their lives as adults. I’d be fine with it if the others show up (I’d nominate all nine of the kids if I could!), I just want these three to get some of the spotlight. If you want to write a romance fic, so long as it’s not incest I’d like that, too.

Prompt continuation: Roger is rather a part of this group too, so if you feel like having him be a co-star of the story, go for it! If you go for the lake idea, a missing moment from any of the books would be lovely... after Picts and Martyrs, when the Swallows arrive... Maybe they do the “furthest south” idea mentioned at the end of Swallows and Amazons? Or a bit later on, when the elders are already adults and it’s just them at the Lakes ...is Titty Captain and Roger Mate of the Swallow now? Is anyone sailing the Amazon? As adults, pre, during, or post war – what do they do, how does the war affect them?... If John/Nancy worms its way in, I certainly won’t complain ;).

What I love about this fandom: It’s one of my favourite book series ever. I love the way there’s never a sense of just “playing pretend” – they are (to themselves, at least) pirates or explorers or miners or an arctic expedition or martyrs or picts... I like how everyone works together, and how hard they work – how they all bring something to the team, and how they’re all valued. I like how they can be friends without having to be all the same; how they respect each other, even if they don’t see eye to eye on some things.

Why I love these characters: as an Astronomy student who loves to write, I may identify slightly with Dick and Dot ;). I also love how close these two are, how they take care of each other. As to Titty – I love her imagination, and her courage.

Sandokan – Sandokán, Yañez

Prompt I gave: Piracy and adventure on the high seas! This fandom is, I think, very little known, so if you’re writing for this pretty much anything will make me happy (though I would prefer no Sandokán/Yañez slash).

Prompt Expansion: I asked for no slash, because their relationships with Mariana and Surama are so deep I can’t see them being with anyone else; also, because of the way they refer to themselves as brothers. It makes it feel slightly incestuous.
A few random ideas:
• Yañez says in "Sandokán" that he was originally a prisoner. How did that happen, how did it change, why did he choose to become a pirate?
• They call each other “brother”. When did that start, and why? Are people (their pirates, say) shocked/surprised by it?
• Why is Yañez usually the one who pretends to be a lord and tricks whatever important person needs to be fooled? Is he better at it than Sandokán? Does he enjoy it more? Does it ever fail? When was the first time he attempted it?

What I love about this fandom: The wild adventures; the fact that the hero is so fiercely anti-colonialist; it’s just so much fun to read!

Why I love these characters: they never, ever give up – and they wind up winning because of that, even against all the odds. Their courage, their cleverness...

The Children of Green Knowe –Toby Oldknow, Alexander Oldknow, Linnet Oldknow

Prompt I gave: I’d love some fluffy sibling fic at Green Knowe between these three (in whatever time period/s you like!).

Prompt continuation: The time period you set the fic in offers all sorts of possibilities – when they were alive? Susan and Jacob’s time? Tolly’s grandmother’s childhood? Tolly’s life? When the green animals were first made? A time we don’t actually see or hear of in canon? Any or all would be lovely.

What I love about this fandom: It’s hard to explain... I think one of the things I love most is that the supernatural happenings are at once very magical and very natural. For Tolly, for instance, it’s magical when he sees them for the first time; but for them, it’s natural to be playing at Green Knowe, and making a playmate of this new boy.

Why I love these characters: I adore the way they treat each other in canon – they seem very close, and though they do tease each other it’s never mean-spirited. I love Linnet’s laughter, and Toby’s courage, and Alexander’s music. I love their animals - Feste, the deer, the squirrel, the mole, the hare.
