Funny that this should come up today. I was in the city centre and walked past the "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" (the falklands are argentine) sign. There's always ex-combatants and supporters of this idea gathered there. Given my heritage, this is a sensitive topic with me, which I won't discuss here.
I glanced at the signs and stuff they had up as usual, and was very surprised to read one sign. I can't remember the full wording, but it was something along the lines of "Argentina needs to bring back obligatory military service. A country without national pride is a failure." My reaction was WHAT THE HELL?!
Here, in most peoples' minds, military service=the "good old days"(extreme sarcasm from me at least) of the dictatorship. (I didn't live through it, thank God, but I know enough about it). The dictatorship which, might I point out, was the cause of the Falklands war, its failure, and the let's-pretend-they-don't-exist attitude to the ex combatants. And they're supporting obligatory military service? that really surprised me.
I guess this makes it fairly clear that NO, I don't support obligatory military service. Not at all.
