Author notes: I... am sorry this is where my brain went on being handed "death" as a prompt. This is not in the same continuity as the rest of my S&A fics (in which absolutely everyone lives!).
Summary: The Swallows and Amazons would have been the right age to fight in WWII. To fight, and to die.

I did this yet again... It really is a fun meme!

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2: Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

Title: Cloak and Dagger

Content notes: Set between Winter Holiday and Pigeon Post.
Author notes: Written for the "communication" challenge at fan_flashworks (I've fallen rather behind in crossposting from there, I just realised).
While we never see Nancy’s handwriting, her printing is in a couple of illustrations, and is much neater than mine. My excuse is that she was in a hurry, and it’s hard to be neat when you can’t see what you’re writing!
Since Titty Walker’s name isn’t given in canon, I named her Mavis after Mavis “Titty” Altounyan, her real-life inspiration.
Summary: the Amazons seek a way to communicate secretly with the Swallows while at school.

Ruth "Nancy" Blackett is refered to as Ruth throughout this fic; in my personal canon, she doesn't adopt the nickname until later on, in the year before the first book in the series. I'm happy to back up the choice with canon, if anyone is interested :)
