It is a great exclamation... Nancy has a variety of those, "shiver my timbers", "barbecued billygoats" and so on. A bobstay is a rope that attaches the bowsprit to the ship(or I suppose the jib-boom, since it's a spar attached to the bowsprit). Which just leads to the question of what the bowsprit is, I guess ;) It's a pole that extends from the front of a vessel, and to which you tie ropes from the sails. (I had to look it up, I must admit... I had a vague idea, but wasn't really sure.)
