SPOILERS for DAYD, 20 Random Facts About Sally-Anne Perks, and Snapshots.
Bluealoe: BTW, Thanfiction, can I ask you some questions about Demelza?
Thanfiction: Of course
Bluealoe: was Colin her first serious boyfriend?
Thanfiction: By serious, what do you mean?
Bluealoe: serious = actually "dating", not just going on one or two dates.
Thanfiction: No
Magikcat112: And I have 1 question, after Bluealoe is done. (I promise it's just one.)
Thanfiction: She was, like a lot of teenage girls, serially In Love For Real This Time OMG He Is The One.
Bluealoe: ah, I see. :) So was she with anyone else that year, before Colin?
Thanfiction: Dated Norman and Andrew, almost dated Jack but was warned off at the last second, had violent crushes on Harry and Dean off and on (as Neville found out)
ceirdwenfc: (poor Neville)
Magikcat112: :D
Thanfiction: The biggest things that set Colin apart were the timing and that he was the one who took her virginity.
Bluealoe: Hehehe, Neville did find that out the hard way.
Ah, that was going to be my next question. When did they end up going all the way? Before or after Easter break?
Thanfiction: But there was WAY more in the way of both sex and alcohol than there ever was before or since when it came to the DA. Half of that was because of the "I don't want to die having never ____" factor, and half of it was the superstitious "We're totally adults because we're doing adult things so that makes us totally adults, right?"
Bluealoe: oh, and did she realize Dean was gay when she had a crush on him?
Thanfiction: (And if we're totally adults then we don't have to be terrified of being kids going up against adults)
Bluealoe: seems like a perfectly reasonable rationalization to me.
Thanfiction: She had suspicions, but that didn't matter, because she was In Love and everyone knows Twu Wub can cure Teh Gay.
Bluealoe: LOL!
ceirdwenfc: It doesn't?
Angakkuq_01 headdesks
Thanfiction: They wound up going all the way about five minutes before Demmy ran for it to the RoR. See "Snapshots"
Angakkuq_01: I could go on all day about how much I hate the "I will cure you with my WUV" trope.
Bluealoe: oh yeah, I should have known that. I need to reread that story.
ceirdwenfc: There's pictures.
:P
Aren't there?
Thanfiction: Picture
Singular
ceirdwenfc: I was being humorous.
Bluealoe: Okay, just one more question: what happened when Demelza met Colin's ghost for the first time? It must have been horribly awkward.
Angakkuq_01: That's putting it mildly, I'm sure.
Thanfiction: Here it is so you don't have to hunt it up again:
His fingers were shaking too much to do up the buckle, so he left his belt undone as his head fell back against the wall, his mouth dry even as sweat clung his hair to his forehead. "God, Demmy, that was mental, but why – I mean, you've never…."
"We're going tonight, Gwen and I," she didn't look up as she tugged her own uniform back into place. "I didn't want Millie having a chance of making you forget me."
"I'd never – wait! You're leaving?!" His eyes widened as she nodded.
"We're the last two of-age Gryffindors. It's run now or risk being caught. And I let Amycus overhear that we're using a Fidelius anyway."
"You!?!" Colin's mouth fell open in horrified betrayal. "Demmy!?!"
"I said it was me! The Fidelius doesn't keep you from lying, and I wanted you to be safe while I'm in hiding. If they think it's me and I'm gone…just promise me." She kissed him, harder and more furiously than she ever had before. "Promise, my brave, stupid Secret-Keeper, promise me you'll stay safe!"
He couldn't, she knew it, but he kissed her until she pulled away, crying. "We'll be back."
"I know. And I'll wait."
Thanfiction: Awkward not so much as "scared the living mother of fuck out of her"
Magikcat112: Have to clean up after the cat, but question before you go: When did Hannah own the Leaky Cauldron?
Thanfiction: When her grandfather Tom died in 2006
It passed directly to her because Tom knew his son was in no state to run the business well
Bluealoe: ah, so she didn't know he'd chosen the ghost route? When did they "meet" after the battle?
Thanfiction: They had scheduled the first memorial for a month after the battle, and she was having panic attacks just thinking about going back, so she went in the middle of the night a few days beforehand, trying to tell herself that if she could see it at night, she could totally handle it during the day.
[And she was doing better than she thought until a very familiar voice said "Demmy, is that you?"
If he hadn't been dead already...
Bluealoe: Holy crap, I would have had a heart attack on the spot if that had happened to me.
Thanfiction: She shot about fifteen things through him before she calmed down enough to recognize that it was a) friend b) Colin and c) a ghost.
If it hadn't been a ghost already, woulda been one by the time her heartrate got below 200
Bluealoe: Wow, poor Demmy...
Thanks for the info. I'm done now, you can go to bed. :)
Thanfiction: It was, however, a later note to self moment that her aim wasn't as bad as she thought given only one eye
ceirdwenfc: LOL
Thanfiction: Oddly, though, the "OMFG!" "I'm sorry!" "I'M GONNA -" "I didn't mean to" etc. really got rid of a lot of the awkward.
Though Colin did stick his foot in it twice more spectacularly before that little encounter was over.
"I really want you to move on, you know? Just because I'm dead...you should have other boyfriends. This whole year was mental, and you don't have to think that because I'm a hero and all you have to do the pining by my grave bit. If you even want to tell the next guy you're a virgin because, you know, thinking you're going to die and stuff doesn't count, I won't tell otherwise."
Just go ahead and try to count the number of slapworthy things in that little earnest speech.
Bluealoe: Oh, Colin. You grew up a lot, but you're still a teenage boy.
Thanfiction: And a Gryffindor at that.
Bluealoe: let's see.....assuming she was planning on pining by his grave, assuming she'd want to forget him, assuming that losing her virginity didn't matter...yeah.
Thanfiction: "If you're done ticking me off, I can kind of still feel things sortof if you want to kiss me goodbye. Like Demi Moore. You look kind of like her, in a way...but I wouldn't have to do the whole wierd lesbian possess Whoopi Goldberg thing."
As I said, he did it twice.
Angakkuq_01 facepalms
Bluealoe: I LOVE that movie (Ghost). But Colin....could you possibly be any more clueless?
Thanfiction: (FYI, "ticking me off" doesn't mean "making me mad", it means "yelling at me.")
Small cross-pond difference that can make a big difference to what you're writing.
Colin is brave, charismatic, heroic, far stronger and more matre than anyone gives him credit for...but he is also a Trek-worshipping, Jedi card-carrying, Marvel-over-DC, working-on-his-Quenya-and-Klingon, D&D-playing GEEK.
This does not tend to walk hand in hand at the age of 16 with nearly as much smooth with the ladies as he thinks it does.
By the time she stormed off that night, she was furious with him and with herself for having been so into him, but then later the grief came back, and eventually it settled into a kind of bittersweet awareness that he had been a good kid - definitely a kid, but they'd both been, whether they wanted to admit it or not - and would probably have been a good man, but if he'd have been the man for her or if they'd have had any feelings beyond that year was something that was useless to speculate about. So she just appreciated what they'd had and went on with her life where a mention of him was a complicated little smile and a shake of the head and "Yeah, Colin was, wasn't he?" in a tone of voice no one could ever quite figure out.
Thanfiction: Anyone else?
Angakkuq_01: Can't think of anything, sorry.
Bluealoe: Thanks for all the information. :)
Thanfiction: Anything else you need/want/wondered?
Bluealoe: does Colin attend the annual reunion/memorials and how does that go over with everyone?
Thanfiction: He does, and ghosts are a part of their world, so they take it in stride much more than we would.
Bluealoe: Good :)
Thanfiction: The only thing that's really eerie is as they get older and he doesn't, it's a real jolt sometimes to have that annual "Sweet Merlin, we were BABIES."
Bluealoe: Hmmmm, lemme think. Demelza married Arthur, right? How did that come about?
yeah, and then to have Colin meet their kids..weeeeird.
Thanfiction: They wound up just sort of coming together as they grew up. The DA stayed pretty tight because when you have a world that just doesn't know war, the only band of veterans is an even closer band of friends than usual, and they were the only ones who Got It, so they ended up pairing off entirely internally except for Luna.
Demmy and Arthur had also been year and Housemates.
(Though he went by Artie)
Bluealoe: what dod Arthur end up doing, career-wise?
Thanfiction: Creatures Response Team...a lot like a cross between Aurors and Animal Control.
Bluealoe: Ooooh, sounds like something Charlie Weasley would enjoy.
Thanfiction: Not dangerous enough ;)
Bluealoe: *L*
Thanfiction: But it was inspired by the encounter with the Fomorians. He'd been working at WWW in Diagon Alley before that.
Bluealoe: Aha, gotcha.
Thanfiction: So if there's been anything about anything you nightowls and timezoners have wanted to pick my brain about....
Bluealoe: Really? Lemme think....
Magikcat112: *raises hand*
Huzzah! Remembered! What did Sally-Anne do between leaving Hogwarts and joining the Aurors?
Thanfiction: She spent the first two years just in rehab, learning to function as a blind witch.
Angakkuq_01: Seriously, Thanfiction, DAYDverse is almost a World Of Badass.
Thanfiction: After that, she was able to get a job putting together toys and trinkets for Merriweather's, a children's toy and novelty store in Hogsmeade, but it was menial, part-time work, yet all she could get being blind but without the skills of someone blind from birth. She was still living with her parents and hated it viciously.
Then Susan found her a loophole to get the magical eyes...but she'd have to become an Auror.
Magikcat112: How did she function? Like, did she use a stick as a guide or anything like that?
Thanfiction: When you look at the DA, though, it's to be expected. The biggest traits that lead to badass are courage, determination, and self-discipline. The latter two they'd learned, and after what they went through, there wasn't much that could scare them.
Angakkuq_01: True enough.
Thanfiction: Mostly she used her wand, similar to what Neville did in Chapter 3. Otherwise it's the same skills as a blinded Muggle.
Magikcat112: *nods*
Thanks.
Thanfiction: Some things that you'd assume she could use, she couldn't, like Accio. She could summon something but not see it coming, you know?
It was hard for her going from fully sighted to stone blind in the space of an instant at the age of 18.
Magikcat112: That must have been awful for her.
Thanfiction: Maybe she could have done more in the six years before Susan got her the loophole and the approval, but there was more than a little depression to figure in.
The first two months, in fact, she didn't even get out of bed except to go to the bathroom and back. The prospect of groping her way helplessly through life (as it seemed to her at that time) was absolutely unbearable.
She wished she'd just been killed outright
Magikcat112: Was that last thought only in the first two months or for a time afterward?
Thanfiction: Definitely the first two months. She was barely this side of fully suicidal. But it did come off and on afterwards, usually when she was really having a hard time with something.
Magikcat112: When she ran into Walter and couldn't recognize him...was there a feel of just frustation and anger or perhaps a bit of feeling useless as well?
Thanfiction: Honestly, it was more a feeling of isolation.
Bluealoe: Okay, I have a question: What can you tell us about Mildred Stemple? We doesn't here anything about her in DAYD. Where's she from, family members, how'd she join the DA, career ambitions...
Thanfiction: First of all, I have to on her behalf say don't call her Mildred. Mildred was her aunt's name, an old lady name, and she hated it. She went by Diana.
Bluealoe: Good to know!!
Thanfiction: Actually, her middle name was Dolores, but she hated that too, and Diana was the best D name she could think of.
She was from Leeds, but she'd tell you she was from "the very edge of the rugged moors," the only Hogwarts student in 5 children, she was smack dab in the middle with two older brothers and two younger sisters.
Bluealoe: the only Hogwarts student? How'd that happen?
Thanfiction: Hogwarts only takes the top 40 each year as far as raw magical ability. The entire UK doesn't just happen to produce - including Muggle Borns - 5 each of witches and wizards of each House each year by random chance.
Bluealoe: I didn't know that! So what happens to the others?
Thanfiction: Now yes, some lines are almost a guaranteed admission ticket because Hogwarts students tend to marry Hogwarts students which means the strongest lines beget more strong children, but it's not a guarantee.
Bluealoe: and how do they measure magic ability?
Thanfiction: They're educated at home. The objective is to make sure that the ones who would be most a danger to self and others if not trained really, really well are given professional attention.
Bluealoe: that must be awful for a family if one of their kids is selected and one isn't.
Thanfiction: No one knows. That's one of the biggest secrets in the wizarding world, and countless scholars have worked for a millenia to try and figure it out. Two weeks after each year ends, the Sorting Hat spits out 40 names (20 each boys and girls) and locations of children. They receive Hogwarts letters, and then when they arrive, it always works out 10-10-10-10.
Angakkuq_01: Or close enough to it.
Bluealoe: that is bizarre.
Thanfiction: It's seen differently from family to family. Sometimes it's awful, sometimes it's "OMG, we have a Hogwarts student in the family!" sometimes it's something else entirely.
Bluealoe: I'm thinking more of the kids that aren't selected when their siblings are...
anyway, is Diana a half-blood, muggle-born or pure-blood?
Thanfiction: It had been an option prior to 97-98 to turn down Hogwarts if you agreed to hire a professional tutor and/or follow a Ministry-approved curriculum and take OWLs and NEWTs. Stemple's family actually had done that, and the Hat had dutifully spit out an extra female Hufflepuff. When it became manditory, however, she had to go.
She's Pureblood.
Bluealoe: aha, so 97-98 was her first year at Hogwarts.
Thanfiction: And ironically enough, given the name she goes by, if you want a really good shorthand reference to her personality, see the titular character of "Anne of Green Gables" by Lucy Maude Montgomery.
Bluealoe: I'm assuming after that year they went back being non-mandatory.
Thanfiction: She'll work her ass off for something she wants, but there's an almost Luna level quality to her sense of the Romantic. Capital R.
Yes
Bluealoe: It's been a long time since I've read that book, but I vaguely remember the romantism...
so is that why she joined the DA?
Thanfiction: The look she got when she announced with absolute heartfelt seriousness after the flogging "It was abhorrant beyond words! Each rubied spatter on the cruel stones tore gems of sympathy from my eyes until I thought I would die from weeping!"
Er.....um.....yeah.....
New girl officially v. wierd.
Bluealoe: *giggles* WOW.
Angakkuq_01: Purple Prose, then.
Magikcat112: I read AoGG. That sounds about right.
Thanfiction: No, Angakkuq_01. Duskiest Lilac.
And remember, this is the House that prides itself on practicality.
Except in her way, she was very practical. Almost a feminine Don Quixote element but without the crazy. She didn't think that her nightgown was radiant silk flowing delicately from her tender limbs, but there was no reason she couldn't be satisfied with comfy flannel by IMAGINING it was.
As far as aspirations, she was going to marry someone wealthy and noble but refuse to enter the petty games of high society, devoting her riches instead to working humbly but with elegance of spirit radiating through her simple attire among the poor.
Dave_agnew: I caught up on the backlog before coming online. I was thinking about making a snarky comment RE: Pure Blood neuroses, but thought the better of it.
Thanfiction: That's more 16 year old girl neuroses.
Dave_agnew: Ah, fair enough.
Magikcat112: So, in a way, she saw her self as what Susan would be.
Thanfiction: Unfortunately, sometimes they don't get over it and marry vampires.
Oh, she LOATHED Susan.
Angakkuq_01: Yeah.
[Magikcat112: Oh?
Thanfiction: (envy)
Magikcat112: Ah.
Bluealoe: so she was quite idealistic.
Angakkuq_01: In the way Hagrid's a bit on the tall side, yes.
Bluealoe: Heh.
Thanfiction: Bitch had everything. The right looks, the right guy, pining six years in maidenly despair before his eyes were opened as she nursed him back to health and they eloped for fear of the cruel tyranny of the current ruler and then off to his humble farm in the Highlands where he was secretly richer than Croesus....
Bluealoe: that's one way to put it, yeah...
Thanfiction: That's how she saw it.
Magikcat112: :D
Bluealoe: except that it didn't end up that way. :(
Thanfiction: And ooooooh, she would have killed for that
Angakkuq_01: And then he dies saving her and their child.
Thanfiction: She never knew it, she was already dead by then.
Angakkuq_01: How much more Romantic does it get?
Well, still.
Bluealoe: so how did she go down in the battle?
Thanfiction: But she was bitterly envious of Susan from the first time she set eyes on her.
Bluealoe: and did she have ANY friends?
Thanfiction: Diana was about 5'8", stocky but not curvy, just kind of blocky, with what her mother honestly called "not unpretty" features, permanently sunburned cheeks, a slightly too-straight nose that she tried to insist was "Classical," medium brown eyes, and very thick, coarse, straight hair a little shorter than shoulder length that wasn't quite brown and wasn't quite blonde.
Susan was everything she'd ever fantasized about looking like.
Magikcat112: Poor Diana.
Thanfiction: She had friends back at home, quite a lot of them. She was very popular among the other girls there because she was the ringleader, the storyteller, their very own Stephanie Meyer, so to speak. She was the one who planned picnics out on the moors where they would drink Ambrosia (sparkling pink lemonade) and be Titania and her Faerie Retinue.
Not so much at Hogwarts. This was not the year for it, and she didn't want to be there and just hated the ugliness of it all.
Magikcat112: Yet, she joined the DA
Thanfiction: She really retreated very deeply into her fantasy world that year. To the point where the lines got very blurry on some things.
What else was she going to do? Side with the forces of Evil?
Bluealoe: unthinkable!
Thanfiction: There was a lot of fantasy reframing. Training with Rowan was toiling beneath the slavemistress, etc.
Anne of Green Gables/Secret Life of Walter Mitty/Labyrinth/Don Quixote, etc.
Magikcat112: How did she fall in the Final Battle?
Bluealoe: do she have a boyfriend (beyond her fantasy)?
Thanfiction: She got hit by a Reducto in the torso.
Think hand grenade.
Magikcat112: Ouch.
Thanfiction: She was waiting for Him.
Dave_agnew: Oh, that poor girl.
Thanfiction: (she would know Him when she met Him, of course)
(white horse possibly dead giveaway)
Magikcat112: :D
Angakkuq_01: Or possibly a Volvo.
Angakkuq_01 ducks
Magikcat112: :D
Dave_agnew: Haha
Angakkuq_01: Sorry. Couldn't resist.
Thanfiction: Oh, she'd have been SO into Twilight
Magikcat112: http://community.livejournal.com/daydverse/152424.html#cutid1 For anyone who wants the list of DA members. ;)
I bet.
Thanfiction: She also had a bullseye for Sloper right in the middle of her forehead.
Angakkuq_01: How much was the real guy and how much was the idea of him that she was in love with? (Assuming I'm reading that correctly)
Dave_agnew: I read it as he saw an opportunity.
Thanfiction: No, it was his sales pitch.
Angakkuq_01: And that made more sense in my head.
Bluealoe: so she was one of the Eleven?
Thanfiction: "My life is empty and sad and silent but you are The One, you make me know love, my heart hears music when I'm with you, I need you, I have never known what it was to truly care about someone until I met you, you(r pants and admission to them as quickly as possible) are all that matters to me now!"
Magikcat112: I. See.
Bluealoe: Perfect sale pitch for a romantic like her.
Thanfiction: Damn near. But Jack wasn't about to go as far as Wedding Night, and that was non-negotiable, even with the full "gonna die" press.
Angakkuq_01: So basically he was a guy.
Bluealoe: aha, so she was "saving herself"
Thanfiction: He'd have scored if it hadn't been for Susan making her believe that you could, in fact, have everything.
Of course she was! That's an essential part of the big romantic package.
She wasn't stupid, though, nor weak, nor empty. This was not Bella Swan.
Magikcat112: Thank God.
Dave_agnew: No, she was a realistic human being
Thanfiction: Definitely re-read your AoGG before you write her. It's not a long or difficult read.
Bluealoe: Of course not! She was DA, and DA may be romantic, but not stupid.
how were her actual fighting skills?
Thanfiction: It depended on her concentration.
She was either pretty damned good, probably would have come in strong second-tier, or she was way off.
And the reason she wasn't better than pretty good is that she lost a lot of time to coping with having been hurled into hell by getting out of it mentally.
[She had been starting to edge towards growing out of it that year - she had just turned
T This is a girl who has never spent more than a weekend away from home in her life.
Magikcat112: Ohhhh....
Bluealoe: YIKES.
Thanfiction: Most popular witch in town, very close and loving family, and then....
Bluealoe: okay, sorry to dump more questions on you, but while we're at it: what can you tell us about Jamie Stebbins?
Thanfiction: Now here I'm conflicted. She was very shy, very private.
No one really knew her except her mother, father, and older sister, and it was her biggest triumph just to go to school.
Bluealoe: Wait, what? Jamie was a GIRL?
I thought the name was James....
Thanfiction: Yes it was, she was named after her grandfather who died when her mother was pregnant with what they were sure was a boy.
Bluealoe: Whoa, whoa, whoa, I need to totally change my DA lists now!
Thanfiction: It was awkward, but a promise was a promise...and a boy's name (even with a gender-neutral variant) combined with a nasty stutter....
No one knew her name was James except for Professor Sprout and previously, Professor Dumbledore. Snape had bigger things to worry about than to connect "James" to "Miss Stebbins" the Hufflepuff who appeared perpetually mute.
Everyone else just knew her as Jamie.
Bluealoe: *shakes head* well, you learn something new every day!
so she was very private and never talked. Did she have any friends?
Thanfiction: She was very close to her sister, who was class of 96-97.
Bluealoe: so why did she go to Hogwarts?
because of her sister?
Thanfiction: She got the invite, her sister was there, and her family thought it would be good for her.
Bluealoe: why did she join the DA?
Thanfiction: Shy doesn't mean cowardly.
Bluealoe: well, I know THAT. But interacting with so many people must have been hard.
Thanfiction: At first she just stayed very much to herself, but then [she opened up.] (Original simile edited to conform to rules)
Bluealoe: oh?
I know you said she was shy, but anything else about her personality?
Thanfiction: They had bigger problems, so it was a surprisingly non-judgmental atmosphere compared to the normal highschool structure.
Bluealoe: that's good and bad, I suppose.
Angakkuq_01: Most things are compared to high school.
Non-judgmental, I mean.
Thanfiction: She was very meticulous, very ordered, loved details. She really wanted to build magical instruments when she got out of school. Happiness was making her miniatures for her big dollhouse back home or shaving that less than paper thin little bit off a single gear inside a watch so that it stopped losing a second each week.
Bluealoe: very Hufflepuff, then :)
okay, I've been hogging all the questions. Anyone else want to chime in?
Angakkuq_01: And Emily, don't worry about asking questions--those of us who are still awake are probably enjoying just listening.
Bluealoe: okay then, if no one minds, I'll ask more...
Thanfiction: They did, but they also knew that they had a certain Refuge in Audacity, to reference a trope. Something that huge, he couldn't get away with just naming anyone. He'd either need proof or he'd have to conceal that the whole thing ever happened.
Bluealoe: hmmmmm....not sure I buy that. If he could incriminate someone for writing harry and cedric's names in the Great Hall, which broke a LOT of rules, surely he could find some "proof" that DA members stole the sword.
I don't blame the DA for trying. They had to do it, regardless of possible punishment. But they should have considered the implications more, in my opinion.
Thanfiction: He didn't incriminate anyone. He pulled a simply psychological outmaneuvering and a punishment that was technically legal for a crime that while demonstrable, wasn't a liability to him.
However, they knew that after that and after the rebellion was supposed to have been suppressed, going to Voldemort and saying "unknown persons broke into the office" would not be taken well, and you can't accuse someone of stealing one of the most valuable relics in the wizarding world without some kind of proof, even in that regime. It's like the difference between that they'll take your word for it if you say you saw the neighbor let their dog pee on your lawn vs your word for it that your neighbor stole the Mona Lisa.
Now, would Snape have found a loophole? Possibly. Possibly he would have had to just asscover it and try backdoor means to get it back, and they were prepared to suffer.
Thanfiction: But it's not a ridiculous theory for them, especially that early on.
Bluealoe: hmmm, okay. I can accept that.
Bluealoe: I keep forgetting that although it was after the flogging, it was before a lot of the more horrible things.
Thanfiction: It's easy to fall into either Omnipotent or Hindsight Fallicy as a reader, or a combination thereof.
Thanfiction: The first is when you know things the character doesn't know, and the second is when you know things that will happen later. In both it's very easy to lose sight that the character is making the decision only with what they know in that moment and no idea how it will turn out.
Bluealoe: that's vey true.
Bluealoe: as my dad used to say, "if we had as much foresight as we had hindsight, we'd be better off by a damned sight."
Thanfiction: lol
Bluealoe: I wonder what Neville and company ever thought about what they would have done differently, afterwards.
Thanfiction: What do you think they were doing while Luna was working on her interior decorating skillz?
Bluealoe: I'm sure they were completely and utterly calm, absolutely at peace with everything that happened and content to wait calmly and meditate. :)
