Update, rant, and other bits and pieces

Haven't updated for ages, so here goes.
I started my second year at university the 8th of March. So far I'm enjoying my subjects (Maths Analysis aka Calculus, Physics, and Astronomy). The Astronomy teacher seemed rather disorganized at first, but he's improving. Analysis is fun, but my ability to draw quadric surfaces in 3D perspective is minimal - in anyone could recommend free graphics software for it, I'd be very grateful! Physics is good, though the use of the letter V for volume and v for velocity confuses me at times - if a friend hadn't pointed it out, I'd have the wrong one in half my formulae.
What I'm not enjoying so much is the sheer amount of classes we have - 28 hours a week! I was talking to friends who're studying economics, and they have 18. you could see me going green! Also, there was a problem with the amount of people in my Physics lab class, and I was among the ones chosen to switch to the Wednesday afternoon class, so there goes my one free afternoon. I do get another free morning, but it's not helping plan the study group for the Maths and Literature kids, since they're all at school in the morning. It wouldn't annoy me so much if it weren't for the fact that the program the faculty uses for inscriptions does have the option of limiting the amount of people who can sign up for a class, so they could easily have avoided this problem. Ah well, it's done now.
Physiotherapy is going well, though it's clearly going to be a staple in my schedule for a while. I hope to be off my crutches by next week. What I'd really like is to get rid of my leg brace. It has two metal rods down the front and one at the back to hold the leg straight. And no matter how tightly I fasten it, or how carefully I place it, it will slide down and one of the front rods will dig into my foot. I really hope the doctor says I can switch to a knee brace next time I see him.
My contest entry for
daydverse is going well, though I do have to check some details for DAYD canon compliance.
A few bits and pieces I've been meaning to post for a while:
Dialogue a few nights ago:
Mum: now I realise how much you used to do around the house. [when I wasn't on crutches and she often complained I didn't help her]
Me: Would you repeat that on tape?

Dear right knee,
I know how hard you've been working, and I love you for it. Really, I do. But please, please, don't start hurting! It makes me panicky. Left knee will be doing its fair share of the work soon, I promise!
Love,
Me
Dear immune system,
Colds? not good, especially not every week or so. You want to get rid of those. Pollen and dust? small amounts won't hurt me. So could you please concentrate on the former, instead of the latter?
Reaching for yet another packet of tissues,
Me

And a rant:
dear maths olympics regional secretary, a few points.
1) If you think I might be interested in training kids from a specific school for the olympics, please contact me and ask. The first I knew of this was a note in an email from someone else in the organization, who I was in contact with over training for the maths and literature olympics.
2) People studying in my faculty do NOT have plenty of spare time. You've worked with various students of it for years, you should know this by now.
3)What on earth made you think giving my cellphone number to a teacher from that school was a good idea??? Why, why, why couldn't you contact me yourself? I do not appreciate having to explain why I can't do something you semi volunteered me for (because giving this teacher my name and number specifically does give her the impression that I'll probably be able to do it!) without even telling me about it first.
And I won't be telling you any of this, at least not in these words, because I do want to continue to be included in olympics activities, and I have a low opinion of your tolerance for dissent and criticism. *sigh*

no subject
Date: 2010-03-24 07:16 pm (UTC)Can you explain to them that you were going to volunteer teaching people (that is what you mean by study group, right?), perhaps getting a letter from the school, asking to switch back to the other section? Another option, which might not be an option at your university, is to just wait for somebody to drop, and switch sections at that point.
Good luck with the physiotherapy.

Nice. :P

Yes, stupid secretaries are annoying.
