Favorite Male Character: I did a re-read fairly recently and I rather enjoyed Jem (and his calm coping with Joey at her most impossible teenage Joeyism), so let's go with him.

Favorite Female Character: Oh goodness, how to choose, there are so many (many many many) options... I cannot pick between Nell and Hilda, so let's go a different direction - I always did identify somewhat with Gillian Linton (I am less of a saint than she is and my sister a lot less of a brat! But there are certain similarities), and she gets to be in the books for a fair while (there's a lot of lovely one-book girls who fade into the background after, I wanted someone a bit more present).

Least Favorite Character: Surprisingly tricky - I mean obviously there's the actual nazis and mad princes and murderous criminals, but I assume it means "other than the obvious villains". My first thought was Mr and Mrs Cochrane - Mrs Cochrane especially seems to make a point of not letting Grizel have anything she wants ever.

Favorite Ship: Nell/Hilda OTP forever and ever, obviously :)

Favorite Friendship: Oooh, complicated - I think it's a tie between Gay, Jacynth and Gillian, and the Quartette.

Favorite Quote: a) Pick ONE quote from a ~60 book series? b) Nell's whole speech about Hilda is my favourite scene ever, but I don't have the quote alas. c) It is in fact apparently impossible to see kindle highlights all together (except online, but my kindle is on my dad's account which I can't log into, and registering it to mine would mean losing books i have on there because fuck DRM...) so I can't actually check the ones I've highlighted! So have this one I liked enough to put on tumblr:

Worst Character Death (if any): Captain Humphries and Bette's husband dying in that climbing accident was pretty sad.

This made me so happy you have no idea Moment: I love how excited everyone gets for Hilda making it to the play in Rosalie. I also greatly enjoyed Jo's repeated attempts on Nell's life during the Sales and the subsequent teasing ;)

Saddest Moment: Die Grossmutter dying at the end of Bernhilda's wedding was genuinely touching... Or the Balbini twins not making it to see their mother... there's a few.

Favorite Location: Tirol - I suspect it was EBD's favourite too? The trip bits definitely feel more "genuine fond memories" than "tourist guide book" like the Swiss ones do.

It is a pretty evil one to give you, especially for Fave female character, I know! But... Chalet School.

I think I'd choose Jem, too.

She's very cruel sometimes. Definitely! There's a lot of sadness really for a children's book series... And a remarkable amount of dead parental figures! (I know you have to get parents out of the way somehow in children's lit, but the boarding school concept already does that quite handily you'd think.)

There's just so much depth of feeling packed into that speech, it's wonderful. I just remembered I once made myself very sad by imagining how it might have gone in an AU where Hilda didn't survive - I think it was a potential bunny from fan_flashworks, which I never wrote obviously because it made me too miserable just thinking about it!

I suppose if you set things in a school attached to a TB sanatorium... But, yes, she does seem to go that way.

I'm not sure the TB deaths are even in the majority though... there's all the people like Eustacia's parents, Jacynth's aunt, Professor Fry, and I'm sure a lot of folk I'm forgetting.

Yes it would be very tragic and angsty and no I am not writing it *ignores evil look :P*
