I've been getting into drawing into never-ending lockdown (I've posted some before - all D&D character art, as I started out with the Critical Role Pub Draw show, then started also drawing characters from High Rollers). But I don't have a scanner, and getting the lighting to work and the colour balance looking okay on photographs can be tricky (or I lack skill and patience with photographing it, also a possibility ;) ). Then I started thinking, can I use GIMP to make the paper background less noticeable / the actual drawing stand out more? Or even remove the background altogether? And one thing led to another, and next thing I knew I had spent three days colouring! Yes, I am in fact very familiar with the concept of "project scope creep", believe it or not :P But I've been having a lot of fun with it, and I really like how the two I've done so far have turned out, so here they are!

Title: (If I Could) Fly
Fandom: High Rollers: Aerois
Rating: G
Length: 2451 words
Content notes: Set during episodes #50, A Desperate Escape, and #76, Echoes of the Galaxy.
Author notes: For the Gravity challenge at fan_flashworks. Title from "If I Could Fly" by Helloween. Am I mad I've already used "Fall Down or Fly" as an HR fic title? Take a wild guess!
Summary: Quill's been hesitant to use this spell, but if ever there was a time to... Two times Quill casts Fly while in astral space.

Second batch of drawings from drawing along to Pub Draw! Top to bottom, left to right: Nott the Brave from Critical Role campaign 2, Pike Trickfoot from Critical Role campaign 1, Grog Strongjaw from Critical Role campaign 1, and Aila from High Rollers Aerois.

A pencil drawing of Nott the Brave from Critical Role A pencil drawing of Pike Trickfoot from Critical Role
A pencil drawing of Grog Strongjaw from Critical Role A pencil drawing of Aila from High Rollers

Pike is winking purely as a character choice, not at all because her left eye would not come out right whatever I did ;) As before, these draw heavily on Babs Tarr’s drawings, and on the official art! I had not realised before trying to draw them quite how intricate Aila’s clothes are… the criss-cross patterns are celtic knotwork in the official art, but I did not even try to do that, I have attempted it before and I know my limits.

Title: Sentry's Painting
Fandom: High Rollers (Aerois)
Rating: G
Length: 1735 words
Content notes: Quill & Sentry, implied Quill/Lucius.
Author notes: For the "paint" challenge at [community profile] fan_flashworks . I may have taken some minor liberties with the use and appearance of the "mending" cantrip!
Summary: Back on the airship, Quill returns the Solwynn painting to Sentry.

So [personal profile] thisbluespirit just reminded me of the existence of the poetry flashfic meme, which reminded me I had an unfinished one! So I dug it out and finished it:

Rules

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2: Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list them in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

4: Bravo! Have a cookie.

I have lost the actual poem authors and names, so apologies for that, but here are the fics:

Chalet School (Each mortal thing does one thing and the same: )

“Is it not difficult, to teach girls of many nationalities? Are they not too different?”

Hilda smiles at the prospective parent. “There are some differences, certainly, but really what I notice most are their similarities! Under the veneer of training, the essential natures of our girls are much the same.”

Critical Role: Mighty Nein (nights of ink and dawn )

Caleb looks up, blinking wearily as he stretches cramped fingers. Finally, he’s finished transcribing the last of the scrolls he’s been carrying into his spellbook. Glancing towards the window, he’s surprised to see it’s not pitch dark any more, the first grey light of dawn beginning to spread. Worth it.

Critical Role: Vox Machina (of his audience )

Scanlan inspects the crowd in the tavern appraisingly. These people look mostly like farmers… the ballad of a ploughboy doing great deeds to win his true love’s heart, that should go down well. Leaping onto a table, he claps his hands. “Good folk! Can I interest you in a song?”

High Rollers: Aerois (or decorate. I wouldn’t ask for beautiful.)

Dropping her pack by the door, Aila looks around the room. Her room… She’s never had a room of her own, the clan lived in tents or rough shelters. She’s not going to go mad decorating, she’s not Lucius, but… feeling strangely daring, she hangs her tartan on the wall.

Swallows and Amazons (The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,)

Dot looks out of her tent, woken by the blazing summer sun. She knows the others think it very tame to be camping in the garden, but this is her first time waking in a tent! So she takes a minute to enjoy it, stories already weaving in her head.

Drawing!

I’ve been trying to learn to draw by following along with Critical Role’s Pub Draw! So far I’ve been doing a couple of draw-alongs per episode, one with the character they’re drawing and one with another for practice.

Title: Shockwave
Fandom: High Rollers: Aerois
Rating: G
Length: 1331 words
Content notes: set at the beginning of Episode 56 (Hearts of Glass).
Author notes: For the "background" challenge at [community profile] fan_flashworks . How this relates to the prompt: background made me think of NPCs, which made me think of Fayeth, which led to speculating on what she might have been doing in the background of the canon scenes.
Summary: After the explosion on the Stormchaser, Fayeth wonders and worries.

Rating: G
Length: 1499 words
Content notes: Spoilers for episode #44, The Elenasto Fiasco.

Title: As The Rains Come
Fandom: High Rollers (Aerois campaign)
Rating: G
Length: 2174 words
Content notes: Modern/human AU, Quill/Lucius, fluffy hurt/comfort. Inspired by this tumblr post. Title comes from After The Storm by Mumford and Sons.
Author notes: Did I write myself this absurdly sweet AU as a self birthday present? Yes, I 100% did ;)
Summary: Driving to a camping trip, Quill and Lucius get caught in a storm.

Title: Speak Low
Fandom: High Rollers (Aerois campaign)
Rating: G
Length: 1616 words
Content notes: Set during Episode 39 (uses dialogue from it), spoilers through that episode. Title comes from Much Ado About Nothing (‘Speak low if you speak love’).
Author notes: For the "heart" challenge at [community profile] fan_flashworks. Inspired by this tumblr post which I have been thinking about for days... There were some very interesting RP choices in that scene, from Tom bringing up the ritual in the first place to Kim and Katie deciding that's what Nova and Aila would remember and think to tell him about!
Summary: Newly returned to the living, Quill has some questions.

Title: Return from the Nighteye
Fandom: High Rollers: Aerois campaign
Rating: G
Length: 668 words
Content notes: SPOILERS for episode 32, Whispers of the Void (and previous episodes), set at the end of 32.
Author notes: For the "shower" prompt at [community profile] fan_flashworks . Thought process on the prompt was shower -> rain -> storm, and was going to be more character study on different characters' reactions to storms until I watched episode 32 and... well. (skip) I cried so much about Quill, from the moment Mark went "she's not in shadows..." and I saw it coming to that damn final image of him and Sentry on the altar. I made my best guess at the spelling of place and god names, from Mark's Behind the Screen and reddit threads.
Summary: Thunder roars continuously above them, and Aila almost wants to go outside and roar back.

Title: Last Night on the Sea Bear
Fandom: Swallows and Amazons series - Arthur Ransome
Rating: G
Length: 500
Content notes: set after the end of "Great Northern?" - I assumed they would have one more night on board, what with everything that happens the last day.
Author notes: For the "sea life" challenge at fan_flashworks. Also for the "weakness" prompt in my 50x500 Swallows and Amazons challenge. In my mental timeline, Great Northern is in the summer of their last "all together" holiday, following John and Nancy's last term at school (it could happen one or two years before that, but I prefer to set it there).
Summary: On their last night aboard the Sea Bear, Susan and Nancy talk of new adventures ahead.
